What Is The Difference Between A Car Adapter and an Auto + Airline Adapter?

The power outlets found in airline seats are a part of a standardized system called Empower. This system supplies 15V DC, up to 75W per outlet via a 4-pin connector. The term Airline Adapter is used to describe an adapter that is compatible with this system. The main differences between a car only adapter and a car + airline adapter are the connector and the 75W maximum limitation.

The type, specifications, and availability of power outlets does vary based upon the airline, airplane model, and seat locations. Some airlines have modified their power system to allow the use of standard car power adapters. You should check with your airline to determine the type, availability, and requirements to use the power outlets on your specific flight.

Why is there no Car + Airline Adapter For My Sony Model?

The one important limitation in the standardized Empower power system is that the outlets are limited to 75W maximum. The outlets cannot provide enough power to run any device that requires more than 75W of power. Auto + Airline adapters cannot be made for Sony laptops that require more than 75W.
