Do You Need A New AC Power Adapter?

We find many people purchase AC power adapters to solve many different types of computer problems. A good portion of returns are from people that purchase an AC adapter only to learn that their computer had some other problem. Below some basic troubleshooting steps to help you determine you need to replace your adapter of if your problem may lie elsewhere.

It is a common misconception that an AC adapter is a "battery charger". All modern laptops have all of the battery charging circuitry built into the battery and computer itself. There is no charging circuitry at all in AC adapters. The AC adapter's only job is to convert the high voltage AC power from the wall outlet into low voltage DC that your computer can handle. It is not impossible for a faulty AC adapter to cause battery charging problem, but it is very rare. If the computer can run from the AC adapter then any battery problems are almost always caused by a bad battery.

Adapter Troubleshooting Steps

1. Disconnect the adapter from the computer and wall outlet.
2. Check all cables and connections for any signs of damage (kinks, bumps, cuts, etc). Any breaks to the internal wires can pose a serious fire risk. If there is any sign of damage to the wires or cables, the adapter should be replaced even if it is functioning properly.
3. Inspect the connector, especially the inside part, to make sure that it is not bent and no parts are missing. Replace the adapter if any signs of damage.
4. Inspect the socket in your computer. Look carefully using a flash light. Use a small, non-conductive, instrument like a plastic pen to push against the pins and parts in the socket to make sure that everything is secure and does not move. If any parts are loose or broken, you will need to have your computer repaired.
5. Check the connection between the removable power cord and the adapter box. Check the pins on the adapter unit to be sure that they are not pushed in and also check the metal parts in the power cord (be sure it is not plugged in). Replace the adapter if any signs of damage.
6. Test you wall outlet using a lamp or other device to confirm that it is working. Connect the removable power cord to the adapter and plug directly into the wall outlet (no power strips, extension cords, etc) and look at the power LED on the adapter itself (if your unit has one). This adapter should be on steady. If the LED is not on or it blinks then the adapter needs to be replaced.
7. Make sure that the computer is off and then plug the adapter into the computer. The LED on the adapter should stay on solid. If the adapter LED turns off when connected to the computer it usually means one of the adapter's protections is shutting the adapter down. If your computer works fine otherwise then it is likely an adapter fault. If the computer is completely dead then you may have a problem within the computer.
8. Check the DC-IN indicate on your laptop. The indication varies between laptops, but it is usually an LED. Check your computer manual to determine how your computer indicates incoming power. If the computer does not recognize the incoming power, try wiggling the connector and bending the wire. If the computer indicates power when moving/bending the wires then there is a poor connection or a break in the wire. The adapter should be replaced.
9. Remove the battery from the computer and try to power the computer using only power from the adapter. If the computer can run under these conditions then in most cases the adapter is good. If your computer can run using the battery (even if just for a brief flash) then your adapter is likely bad. If the computer is 100% completely dead and you cannot get any of the LEDs to even flash using either AC or battery power then the problem is likely within the computer itself.
10. If you have the technical skills and equipment, the adapter output can be checked with a volt meter. The measured output should be within +/- 1V of the adapter's output rating. The connections an polarity will vary by adapter model, however for most barrel type plugs the center is (+) and the outside is (-). Most connectors with a pin in the center have (+) as the inside of the outer shell, (-) as the outside of the outer shell (the small pin is used for communications and does not carry power).
